An impressive system of fortifications, almost entirely dismantled after the Treaty of London in 1867, defended Kirchberg and protected the fortress city. Engineer Vauban, who led the siege works in 1684, was entrusted with the project to reinforce the fortress.

Two-hour guided tours are available. Important: Appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear, and a flashlight are required.
