An impressive system of fortifications, almost entirely disappeared since the 1867 Treaty of London, defended the Kirchberg and protected the fortress city. The engineer Vauban, who led the siege works in 1684, was tasked with developing a project for the fortress's enhancement. The museum offers guided tours of these fortifications.
