The Poetics of Decay
During the Renaissance, the remnants of ancient Rome inspired poets, writers, and artists. The ruins, with their collapsed arches and columns, symbolize the fleeting nature of human endeavor and the triumph of nature. In the 17th and 18th centuries, painters immortalized these ruins, creating landscapes where nature and architecture intertwine. This symbolic pictorial genre is illustrated by artists such as Giovanni Paolo Panini, Denise Duchateau, Pieter van Bredael, Monsu Desiderio, Piranesi, Claude Lorrain, Pierre Patel, and Hubert Robert.
