Gardens and the Gothic - Cinematic Gardens and the Subconscious: Nature, Symbolism and the Psyche in
Throughout the history of cinema, gardens, parks, courtyards, and other green spaces have played a role far more significant than mere backdrops. These places serve to express desires, anxieties, and fantasies, becoming spaces where chaos and order intertwine, human intervention alongside wild nature. Whether the walled garden of "The Secret Garden" represents grief and self-discovery, the suburban lawns of "Broken Flowers" illustrate social status, or the stylized battlefield of the Japanese garden in "Kill Bill," cinematic green spaces frequently reflect deeper social realities or emotional states. This program of four lectures explores this symbolism.
