The world is suffering or boredom, according to the pessimistic German classic Arthur Schopenhauer. His philosophy attempts to unravel the structure of our world, our life, and summarizes what we experience every day: There is a constant will, urges, struggles and destruction. What role does beauty and art play in this? In art, especially in music, we experience a break from all this torment, a freedom in which we can unfold. The different art forms show us the tragedy of this constant will in very different ways, inviting us into an enlightening parallel world. With Søren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche, we connect to the dramatic dimension of life; good and bad, desire and torment, everything is interconnected and nothing is eternal. Even beauty can only arise when suffering prevails. Art is our salvation and, in contrast to Schopenhauer's pessimism, an explicit yes! to life. Schönberg, Beckett and Munch were all deeply influenced by these thinkers.
