Everyone seems to know what is meant by "It's beautiful!"; but what exactly is this disturbingly beautiful thing?
Plato, in the 5th century BC, already raised the question of beauty, while criticizing the contribution of art to it. Reflection on the "beauty of beauty" began in Antiquity. When Plato speaks of beauty as the beauty of absolute truth, the encounter with this beauty implies a memory of the nature of things. The German poet Friedrich Hölderlin takes up this idea: the experience of beauty reminds us of our "true" meaning. Gustav Mahler and Kandinsky are equally convinced of this! But art, according to Plato, is an obstacle: it only creates images of beauty and thus distances us from the truth. The fact that Aristotle contradicts his master here, and that the German philosopher GWF Hegel builds a bridge, allows us to come closer to the relationship between beauty and truth, art and the absolute.
