Science fiction and fantasy have demonstrable European roots, including film classics such as Metropolis (DE, 1927) or Woman in the Moon (DE, 1929). However, these genres have primarily been developed in North America and are often considered Hollywood genres. European filmmakers have uniquely reinterpreted these genres since the post-war period, creating thoughtful and visually stunning works that reflect contemporary social and political themes. Accompanied by excerpts from iconic films, we explore the landscape of European sci-fi and fantasy cinema.
