After his mother's disappearance in a fire, 11-year-old Mahito is forced to leave Tokyo to live in the countryside, in the village where she grew up. He moves in with his father in an old mansion on a vast estate, where he meets a grey heron who gradually becomes his guide, helping him, through his discoveries and questions, to understand the world around him and unravel the mysteries of life.
