Master of the cityscape: Canaletto's Venice
The painter Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768), known as Canaletto, is one of Venice's most renowned artists. Famous for his detailed depictions of the lagoon city, he mastered this style. Through two of Canaletto's paintings in Villa Vauban's permanent exhibition and several works in the temporary exhibition, this tour examines different forms of urban representation (vedute vs. capriccio) using Venice as an example. Before the invention of photography and mass tourism, this art form held a significant role and continues to fascinate audiences today. The tour is guided by curators Angelika Glesius and Julia Niewind.
