María Margarita lives in a mining town in the Atacama Desert in the 1960s, amidst political changes in Chile. As her family is too poor to afford cinema tickets for everyone, one family member is sent to watch a film and then recounts it to the entire family. The young woman excels in this role, becoming the family's designated movie teller.
