"The Artist" (France, 2011) is a film directed by Michel Hazanavicius, starring Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, and John Goodman. Set at the end of the silent film era, actor George Valentin is a true matinée idol. While working on his latest film, he finds himself falling for the young ingénue Peppy Miller, who seems to return his affections. George hesitates to betray his wife, and the advent of sound in cinema further widens the gap between them as George's career fades and Peppy's flourishes.
