The young Else must help her father, who has embezzled funds, out of trouble and prevent a public scandal. However, the condition posed by the potential lender is equally scandalous: Else must pose nude for a quarter of an hour in front of him. For the sake of her father, despite herself, Else agrees. This moment of self-sacrifice will have tragic consequences. This iconic work of Viennese modernity, written by Arthur Schnitzler in 1924, is a profound exploration of power abuse, double morality, and the commodification of female bodies, presented as a stream of consciousness from Else's perspective. The text will be performed during a captivating reading by Marie Jung at the TNL foyer.
