King of the Netherlands - Grand Duke of Luxembourg
The sovereigns of the 19th century left their mark on the military and society. King-Grand Duke William I of Nassau ruled Luxembourg through personal union. With the outbreak of the Belgian Revolution in 1830, his reign began. His son, William II, the hero of Waterloo, formed the federal contingent. The following spring after the Revolution of 1848, he died of a severe illness. His son, William III, took the reins for four decades, steering the Grand Duchy through the Luxembourg Crisis of 1867 to neutrality. He died in 1890 without male heirs, leading to Adolphe of Nassau-Weilbourg becoming not only the new military commander but also establishing a new dynasty for the country.
