Opera Live '26: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
On May 30, the Metropolitan Opera's 2025–26 Live in HD season concludes with a live transmission of Gabriela Lena Frank's opera, portraying Mexico's iconic artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with a libretto by playwright Nilo Cruz. Inspired by the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, it narrates Frida, performed by mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, departing the underworld during the Day of the Dead to reunite briefly with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. They relive their passionate yet tumultuous relationship before bidding farewell. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts this vibrant production inspired by their artistic works.
