An elderly American filmmaker, J.J. Hannaford (John Huston), a mix of John Ford and Ernest Hemingway, returns to Hollywood after years of exile in Europe. He is finishing a new film challenging the entire spectrum of young American cinema. A party is held in his honor at his ranch by Hollywood's elite on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. However, the evening won't end as planned.
