This year, CinEast’s special edition of the Women’s Event joins forces with our Outdoor Event to present an evening dedicated to women who defy limits. Through the story of legendary Polish climber Wanda Rutkiewicz, we reflect on courage, endurance, and the role of women in some of the most extreme human challenges.

The evening begins with a screening of “The Last Expedition” by acclaimed Polish filmmaker and mountaineer Eliza Kubarska. Winner of the 2025 Polish Film Award (Golden Eagle) for Best Documentary, the film chronicles Wanda Rutkiewicz’s historic achievements in the 1980s as the first woman in the world, and the first Pole, to conquer both Everest and K2. Rutkiewicz mysteriously disappeared three decades ago during her final climb on Kangchenjunga, leaving an enduring enigma. Using rare archival materials, including Wanda’s audio diaries, testimonies from world-renowned climbers (Reinhold Messner, Krzysztof Wielicki, Carlos Carsolio), and accounts from her family and collaborators, Kubarska reconstructs the life of a fearless mountaineer while exploring themes of courage, solitude, and the challenges women face in male-dominated extreme sports.

Following the screening, a debate and Q&A moderated by Martyna Adamska features Kubarska alongside Annick Goerens, Luxembourgish journalist, climber, adventurer, and feminist. Together, they will discuss the golden era of Polish Himalayanism and broaden the conversation to the wider challenges faced by women striving to compete alongside men in the world’s most demanding environments.

Join us for an evening to celebrate those who push beyond the summit, both in the mountains and in life, reflecting on courage, endurance, and breaking barriers.
