Sound Effects Workshop: Expressive, handmade, and organic sounds
An invitation to listen, try, and create sounds – live and analog. How does a movement sound? How can the rustling of leaves, the stealth of a cat, or the weight of a body on dry ground be translated into audible reality?
In the workshop led by Lampros Tsaganas, sounds are not explained but made. Using simple means such as hands, feet, everyday objects, or microphones, a sound world emerges to accompany, complement, or question visuals. The starting point is David Claerbout's film The Pure Necessity, a photorealistic reanimation of the Disney classic The Jungle Book, devoid of dialogue and music but filled with precise natural and artificially produced sounds.
The workshop delves into the silent intensity between image and sound. Since the 1920s when Jack Foley synchronized sounds for cinema, the art of sound effects has become a vital component of cinematic storytelling. It remains a manual, precise, creative, and organic practice.
Lampros Tsaganas, an independent artist based in Metz, collaborates with studios in Luxembourg and Germany. Materials are provided by Konschthal.
