Visit: Luxembourg Federal Contingent. Army and Society in the 19th Century
In the midst of Europe shaped by democratic upheavals and national wars, Luxembourg's national army – the Luxembourg Federal Contingent – represents an equally forgotten and intricate chapter of history, taken up and examined in this exhibition. The focus is on the military's impact on politics, economy, and society: how did the recruitment, barracking, supply, and equipping of the 1600-strong troop influence everyday life in the Grand Duchy? The exhibition brings together artifacts from its historical collections and prestigious loans, recounting personal stories about societal and military challenges in 19th-century Luxembourg, such as the career of officer Louis-Alphonse Munchen.
