Dr. Rainer Werning, a German political scientist and journalist based in Cologne, is an authority on the history, culture, and sociopolitical developments in Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines. Having traveled frequently to the region since 1968, he has contributed numerous articles on the Philippines. His latest work, co-edited with German theologian Jörg Schwieger, was published for the Frankfurt Book Fair, where the Philippines were the Guest of Honour. The book compiles essays describing the history, societal and economic developments, and the geopolitical role of the Philippines in the Asia-Pacific region from various perspectives. During his presentation, Dr. Werning will provide insights on the current political situation in the Philippines under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and its geopolitical impacts in the Asia-Pacific region. A Q&A and open discussion will follow.
