About the artist:
Born in 1970 in Rognac, Cédric Bouteiller lives and works in the south of France. Drawn to illustration and graphic design from a young age, he was inspired by greats like Gustav Klimt and Salvador Dalí. Over time, he shifted to working with painted materials, developing a passion for texture, which he manipulates with a palette knife or spatula.
During his first year studying art history, he devoted himself entirely to painting, leaving drawing behind. His approach is simple: color, texture, and movement. “We had to forget the illustrative gesture, its academic codes, oppositions, and limits, to get closer to painting. A painting that turned out to be abstract, even though I didn’t know the meaning of the word at the time.” For him, pure figuration is still expressed through photography.
Today, photography and painting overlap, coexisting within the same work.
Often compared to an alchemist, Bouteiller experiments with oxidation, hardening, and evaporation. Every leftover detail nourishes his canvases. His studio, filled with drawing tables, pigments, digital maps, and art books, is a true creative chaos that fuels his imagination.
An internationally renowned artist, he has exhibited in Paris, Bordeaux, Mykonos, Athens, Venice, Los Angeles, New York, and Shanghai. Born into a working-class family, he was a rebellious young boy with a passion for drawing. His training in industrial design gave him mastery over geometry, dimensions, and spatial forms, elements that continue to influence his work today.
