CaboCuba Jazz
Here, musical styles like jazz, Latin, and Cape Verdean music merge into a completely new sound that electrifies both jazz and world music fans. They simply take the best from the two Creole-influenced islands and enrich it with elegant jazz. Their debut album, "Rikeza y Valor," was voted Best World Music Album in the Netherlands in 2011, and Cape Verdean singer Dina Medina was named "Best Female Singer" at the Cabo Verde Music Awards a year later. The album itself received four nominations at the same competition!
CaboCubaJazz was founded by the German percussion guru Nils Fischer, who studied percussion in Cuba, Brazil, and Puerto Rico. He enjoys a superb reputation in the Latin American percussion scene and has contributed to more than 50 CD productions. His album "Timbazo" was even shortlisted for a Grammy nomination in four categories. The Cuban percussionist and singer Armando Vidal brings the Cuban rhythms to the mix. Bassist Yerman Aponte hails from Venezuela. What truly distinguishes CaboCubaJazz from conventional Latin jazz bands, however, is the inclusion of Cape Verdean musicians.
Polina Viera and pianist Carlos Matos are deeply rooted in the musical tradition of their homeland. The slow sung mornas, Cape Verdean songs in minor keys about longing and desire, are guaranteed to give you goosebumps. But very quickly, an exuberant atmosphere takes hold again when Cape Verdean coladera, salsa, rumba, or world jazz get everyone dancing.
