To mark the 107th anniversary of the regaining of the independence of the Republic of Poland and the commemoration of the Armistice marking the end of the First World War, the C²DH and the Polish Embassy in Luxembourg invite you to a roundtable discussion. This dialogue will explore various historical trajectories and geopolitical reflections in Europe and the Global South.
We begin our exploration by examining Poland's tumultuous history, marked by historical tensions with its neighbors. This examination starts with the partitions of the country and the recovery of its sovereignty in 1918, continues through the trials of the Second World War, and culminates in its current place within the EU and NATO.
We will then discuss the evolution of the concept of sovereignty in India, tracing how the colonial legacy and post-independence aspirations have shaped its global position.
Finally, we turn to Luxembourg, whose transformation from a steel-based economy into a banking powerhouse reflects a unique European trajectory of interdependence.
Together, these perspectives invite us to rethink how independence is narrated, how dependence is negotiated, and how codependency is experienced. We will examine how historical memory continues to shape political attitudes and international alliances. This is not merely a dialogue about the past, but also a framework for understanding the present. Offering distinct viewpoints, the discussion aims to converge on the following question: what does it mean to be sovereign in a world of inextricably linked histories and experiences?
Where does it take place?
