Robin Ticciati & Luxembourg Philharmonic
An instrument was invented especially for this symphony! Towards the end of the last movement, you'll hear a 10-kilogram hammer strike two notes on a solid wooden box to signify the blows of fate. Never two without three, a final blow was even included in the original version, as the symphony's hero was supposed to fall "like a tree." However, Gustav Mahler got scared and simply crossed it out of the score! Superstitious? Perhaps.
On December 11th, the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra will tackle this monumental and emotionally complex work. Don't miss it and keep your eyes peeled to admire Mahler's "hammer" in action!
