Opening: Charles Arendt (1825-1910): State Architect
Charles Arendt (1825-1910) is acknowledged as one of the most influential architects of the 19th century in Luxembourg. As the country's first State Architect, he guided the transformation of the Grand Duchy toward a constitutional monarchy, significantly shaping its political, religious, and public edifices.
Marrying function with symbolism, his works expressed state authority, created sanctuaries of faith, and accommodated a society undergoing modernization. Balancing representation with daily life, permanence with innovation, Arendt's architectural vocabulary remains a prominent feature of Luxembourg's urban setting.
This exhibition offers an opportunity to (re)explore Charles Arendt as a trailblazing architect whose creations defined an era of change and laid the groundwork for a resilient architectural culture.
