14-year-old Billie spends most of her time in her high-rise housing complex. At the end of the month, money only allows for pasta with ketchup, but her mother Marika brightens Billie's world with imagination and a big heart. Then, an unwanted grandmother from Hungary arrives, and Billie loses more than just her colorful daily life with her mother. Unable to ask Marika further questions, Billie takes off alone in the old Nissan – she must find her unknown father and figure out why she often dreams of the sea despite never having been there.
