For a while now, the words of an odd tune (Hoarseness Is The Whatness) have been stuck with me. They often lead me to reflect on their bold claim. The song says, in essence: *Will someone find out what the word is that makes the world go round?* *Cause I thought it was love.* *But some say that it has to be 'choice'* *I read it in some book, or on an old pack of smokes.* The lyrics conclude with the dramatic phrase: "You choose or you exist," followed by a lingering, dreamy melody... Well, I couldn’t dream of a better voice than that of Stevens, the butler of Darlington Hall, to amplify this contemplation on the weight of choices, their consequences, and how we manage to accept them. This is arguably Kazuo Ishiguro's best work, and I’m thrilled to discuss it (or the movie, if you prefer).
