Legend of the work: Pauline B. – 2temps2Pauline B. I was born in Paris in '91 and grew up there. As a child, I was fascinated by the hands and shoes of metro users. I was sensitive to these unique individualities of each person. Every time it was different, and I collected them in my mind. After a short stint at the University of Paris 8, the metro felt quite oppressive during that period, daily taking line 13, so I joined ÉSAL Épinal. There, I discovered new splendors: light, through photography and its suspended moments, and painting with its colors. Their fragile nature pushed me to seek a balance, so as not to lose them. If the notion of sensitivity in my work was at first about film or photographic paper, it soon associated with an interest in humanity. Like a return to the hands of metro passengers.
"Mélancolies des Débonnaires": Once, I heard a man on the radio speak about sleep, and specifically the moment when one dreams, defining it as: "20 minutes of thought without constraint." This phrase often comes to my mind, and for several years now, I have started a series of paintings called Les Mélancolies des Débonnaires. These are characters (often) alone in simple spaces, both indoors and outdoors. Twisted figures that are present yet absent. Witnesses, they sometimes look at us with their eyes closed. One wonders what they are doing there. The absurd appears, without negating plausibility. A presumption of reality – plausible without being real. With this series, I want my paintings to depict awakened dreamers, seemingly embodying the free time described by the man on the radio. I do not adhere to formal constraints (e.g., a fixed format, color coding, etc.). Nor do I aim to establish dialogue between the different paintings, although this might arise naturally, giving birth to diptychs.
