"The Elegance of the Molecule" by Petr Zelenka, one of the Czech Republic's most accomplished contemporary playwrights, explores the complex figure of Professor Antonín Holý, the Czech chemistry genius considered one of the fathers of the AIDS drug now used by more than eighty percent of patients worldwide. The path from the conception of a drug to its availability on pharmacy shelves is uncertain, lengthy, costly, and requires the work of thousands of people. The play tells the story of three substances and their three "fathers": Antonín Holý, the Belgian physician Erik de Clercq, and a heavyweight in the medical, scientific, and chemical industry, John C. Martin. Thus, the play examines the highly dramatic creation and industrial development of substances from Czech chemical laboratories, blending documentary elements with fiction and lightening the scientific facts with a touch of humor.
