Person – Since I've Been Me
In his new creation, director Robert Wilson pays homage to one of the most original figures of 20th-century modernism, the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa.
Pessoa wrote a singular body of work, characterized by highly diverse moods, moving fluidly from meditative or comic writing to a rational or anarchic style, depending on the author's various heteronyms—that is, the pseudonyms used to embody fictional authors, each possessing an imaginary life of their own and a particular literary style, such as Alexander Search, Bernardo Soares, Álvaro de Campos, or Ricardo Reis. They were his allies in the great, free adventure of poetry, which Robert Wilson translates onto the stage through a profusion of imagery.
Surrounded by an international team, including playwright Darryl Pinckney and costume designer Jacques Reynaud, Robert Wilson stages the fascinating games of mirrors suggested by the diversity of writings invented by the poet, which is echoed by the virtuosity of the actors who give form to Pessoa's reveries, restoring his words in a multiplicity of languages.
