Set in Edo-period Japan, this film narrates the story of Ishun, prosperous but miserly and cruel, who often mistreats his wife Osan. When her brother desperately needs money, Osan teams up with Mohei, an employee of Ishun, to steal a sum from her husband. Upon discovering the theft, Ishun accuses Osan and Mohei of adultery, a crime punishable by crucifixion. Ironically, these accusations drive the pair to escape together and fall in love. The film explores themes of social injustice, harassment, and repressive moralities.
