Domestication is an almost magical word: when examined closely, it opens up a journey that is at once historical, biological, and cultural. We discover that it has occurred several times, in different regions and at different times, profoundly transforming animals, the environment, and human societies. Beginning with dogs more than 10,000 years ago, it continued with cows, horses, chickens, silkworms and even camels, always following the same slow and difficult process, from capture to the patient mechanism of selection. Far from being a phenomenon of the past, the number of species undergoing domestication has increased considerably in recent decades. Along the way, domestication has shaped our lifestyles and knowledge, while strengthening our control over nature.

This lecture, based on specific and illustrated examples, will offer a better understanding of this complex phenomenon and the questions it still raises today.
