Adventures on the Mississippi
Paris, 1720. Marguerite Pancatelin, the Superior of the Salpêtrière, is tasked with selecting around a hundred “volunteer” women to be sent to Louisiana to marry French settlers. “La Louisiane” (Stock) retraces the fate of these forgotten women of history. Translated into over 20 languages, Julia Malye’s fourth novel highlights the story of these ‘Brides of the Whale.’ The paths of three of them are followed, offering a unique perspective that blends imagination and knowledge. Julia Malye (Paris, 1994) published her first novel, “La Fiancée de Tocqueville” (Balland), at the age of 15. She is a translator of English works for Les Belles Lettres and, since 2018, she has been teaching fiction writing at Sciences Po. Her fourth novel, “La Louisiane,” written in both French and English, is being translated in over twenty countries and will be adapted as a series.
