A few years ago, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets demanding more ambitious climate goals. Today, it is mainly those who would be penalized by such policies who protest: farmers, commuters, property owners. The ecological transformation project seems to have reached its limits.
Philipp Staab diagnoses a deep systemic crisis. Increasingly, distrust is turning into open rejection not only of the climate transition, but also of fundamental liberal values and democracy itself.
Philipp Staab, born in 1983, is a professor of sociology of work, economics, and technological change at Humboldt University in Berlin. In 2021, he received the Hans-Matthöfer Prize for economic journalism. Caroline Mart is a Luxembourgish journalist, deputy editor-in-chief at RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg and responsible for the show Kloertext.
