What does it mean to interpret an artwork through the body, the senses, the spirit? For this performance, choreographer Léa Tirabasso and dancer Catarina Barbosa draw on Eleanor Antin’s work through narration and movement, offering a renewed perspective on it.

As Antin developed a series of alter egos and fictional characters to articulate her positions on social and political concerns shaping her practice, this activation proposes a choreographic reading of her work through the prism of contemporary dance. The performer engages with several of these figures, embodying and reinterpreting them live on the second last Sunday of the exhibition.

Central to this activation is the figure of the ballerina—a motif recurring throughout Antin’s life and work. Through movement, this character is revisited in a way that echoes Antin’s reflections on the constraints of grace and femininity, and the impossibility of the ideal she critically examined.

In this live interpretation, the ballerina gradually comes into being, inviting the audience to rediscover one of Antin’s most iconic figures through a fresh and vivid presence.
