Catharina Margaretha Linck, also known as Anastasius Lagrantinus Rosenstengel, was the last person considered a woman to be executed in Europe for sodomy. Born in 1687, Linck led a life of gender transition, under the constant yoke of suspicion and surveillance. She was at one time a man in the army, then married, before finally being condemned to death as a woman for sodomy.

Linck's story, worthy of a picaresque novel, has been adapted for the stage by the writing duo Matter*Verse. Alias Anastasius approaches the historical figure in a light and playful tone, bringing both adversaries and companions to life in moments, while also revealing the hardships and loneliness that Anastasius must have felt – in the constant turmoil between the sexes, fueled by hunger and fear.

The production by promising young director Fritzi Wartenberg marks the Berliner Ensemble's return to the Théâtres de la Ville. Luxembourgish actor Max Gindorff is also part of the cast. After engagements at Munich's Residenztheater and Vienna's Burgtheater, Gindorff has been a member of the Berliner Ensemble since the 2023/24 season, where he received the Helene Weigel Prize in 2024.
