Edward Lewis, a disillusioned businessman who wears his gray hair and sad eyes with supreme elegance, deals in buying up bankrupt companies and reselling them. Visiting Los Angeles, he leaves a boring social gathering and gets lost in a seedy neighborhood on his way back to his hotel. There he meets Vivian, a young and beautiful prostitute who works on Hollywood Boulevard.
