Twentieth Century (Cinema-Theatre)
A Broadway director creates a star whom he marries. But after three years of marital failure, she leaves for Hollywood. While he declines, she triumphs. Until the day they meet again on a train…
Now considered one of the first examples of a "screwball comedy," Twentieth Century was a critical triumph and helped launch the genre. The last two thirds of the film take place on the famous "Twentieth Century" train: the pace accelerates frenetically, driven by Barrymore's verbal and behavioral frenzy and Carole Lombard's hysterical performance in her first comedic role. Master of agitation in a closed space, Howard Hawks overcomes the static feel of a stage adaptation and explores a theme dear to his comedies: romantic games disrupting social norms, while also getting trapped in them.
