In Greece, a unique music was created: rembetiko. The songs speak about love and suffering, prison and drugs – rembetiko is the music of the Greek underground.
This musical genre draws its inspiration from Greek, Turkish, Roma, and Jewish musical conventions, producing a truly unique sound. Once an underground music, rebetiko is now widespread.
Rebetiko songs contain invaluable references to the customs, practices, and traditions of a particular way of life that involved rebellion, artistic expression, love, and often crime. Rebetiko was born in the hashish dens of port cities like Piraeus, where musicians and followers of the movement would gather and sing about their daily lives.
