MONTE ROSA by Teresa Dopler
Thick clouds of smog lie in the valleys, the glaciers have melted away, and only high up in the Alpine massifs are mountaineers still out and about. Well trained and optimally equipped, they are always on their way to the next summit, where the air is cleanest. Three of them meet along the way, frankly assessing each other's health, age and fitness to gauge their worth and possibly negotiate a temporary partnership. It quickly becomes clear that questionable values and strange manners prevail here. The past and everything away from the mountains seems forgotten, no one remembers faces here anymore, and the death of one's partner in a rockfall is quickly overcome. Instead of human emotions, there is a steely optimism. It almost seems as if nothing can shake these mountaineers in their existence...
