Born in Mexico City and raised between Mexico, the United States, and the United Kingdom, Raw’s music reflects her nomadic identity and multidisciplinary background. After a brief career as a visual artist, she began to infuse her artistic language into music. She adopted a stripped-down, analog aesthetic, often recording on a cassette 4-track Tascam, allowing tape hiss and imperfections to become part of the atmosphere. Even as her recordings evolved, these textures continue to shape her work.
Raw first appeared on big stages with her band Love La Femme, which paved the way for her to develop her own voice. After closing that chapter, she launched her solo career, combining folk ballads, spectral country blues, and passionate Spanish songs with the rebellious irreverence of punk.
Raw writes songs that seem like unearthed relics. Her voice is both mesmerizing and intimate, blending the grit of rockabilly, the dramatic expressiveness of bolero, and the raw spontaneity of lo-fi folk— influenced by Lou Reed’s minimalist arrangements and the dramatic lineage of Latin bolero, from José José to Chavela Vargas and Violeta Parra. Her performances carry nostalgia tinged with deep defiance, marked by emotional intensity and raw energy.
Drawing on her multifaceted biography, Raw explores themes of identity, family, and the search for love in the wrong places. She weaves together multiple genres into her own tapestry of lo-fi songs, creating a musical and visual universe that expresses itself in both Spanish and English.
