Greek movie with English subtitles
Synopsis
In 1949, Giannis, the son of a partisan, is torn from the warmth of his village home. His grandmother, convinced she is entrusting him to the Queen Frederick's Children's Home orphanage, hopes he will learn to read and write there. In these institutions where ideas and desires are manipulated, the child spends six of the most fragile years of his life. Nightmares and dark feelings toward his father haunt his heart… The true story by the writer Yannis Atzakas.
During the Greek Civil War (1946-1949), both opposing armies rounded up children and took them from their homes. Government forces took them to Children's Cities established by the "Northern Greek Provinces Charity Fund, under the High Patronage of Queen Frederica".
The Republican army transported children across the country's borders to similar institutions in Eastern Bloc countries. These children were, in effect, both "rescued" and "abducted." They were saved because they were protected from bombing, better fed than those who remained in their villages, and many received an education. But they were abducted in the sense that both sides wanted to educate them according to their own beliefs, confine them to their own world, and propagate their policies.
