Anna Karenina - Theater
All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way - the famous first sentence from Tolstoy's epic novel Anna Karenina gets straight to the point. Anna, a young mother, leads an apparently carefree life in St. Petersburg with her husband. She seemingly has everything required for happiness – but she is not happy. When the charming Count Vronsky, in many ways the opposite of her husband, enters Anna's life, she falls completely in love with him. By openly declaring her love for Vronsky, Anna quickly sacrifices everything that made up her life: her husband, even though he refuses a divorce, her son, and the respect of society. But even with Vronsky, Anna soon feels misunderstood. What began as the “Greatest Love of All” becomes a destructive whirlpool of jealousy, hate, and self-destruction. With the same resolve she chose love, Anna chooses death. In his complex work Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy creates a panorama of vibrant characters, each representing the impossible possibilities of being human, and the complex realities of love and connection between men and women. In a new stage adaptation, director Frank Hoffmann with a remarkable ensemble will bring Tolstoy's masterpiece to life as a contemporary and timeless theatrical experience in a vast space designed by German painter Ben Willikens.
