Film conference: Silence, noise, music – the voices of film.
Presented by Dick Tomasovic (professor in cinema theories and practices, University of Liège).
Long relegated to the background compared to the image in cinema theories, sound is nonetheless an essential component of film writing. This conference invites the audience to listen to the film as much as to watch it, offering an exploration of sound usage and changes in cinema, from the transition from silent to talkies to contemporary sound design experiments. In and off-screen voices, sound effects, pre-existing or composed music, direct or post-synchronized sounds, and technical devices (stereo, dolby surround): all these aspects help us understand how sound makes us better viewers.
The conference is followed by a "snack & drink" interlude and the screening of the feature film "Le Roman d’un tricheur" by Sacha Guitry (France 1936, original French version, 77’), cast: Sacha Guitry, Marguerite Moreno, Jacqueline Delubac.
"The great Orson Welles adored this (almost) dialogue-free film, in which the Narrator seems, at every moment, to create images in tune with his memories. Masterful art." (La Coursive)
