What image of Europe and the confederation of states, the EU, is conveyed in European films and television productions? According to the latest Polindex study by the University of Luxembourg, more than one third of young Luxembourgers believe that democracy is not the best form of government. Confidence in democratic institutions in Luxembourg and the European Union is declining. Could this also be explained by the fact that we cannot truly picture these institutions? That there are no stories or images associated with them? That European and national commissioners or deputies are not characters featured in our works of fiction? Luxembourg film screenwriter and critic Viviane Thill analyzes the rare exceptions and examines how democratic institutions are represented in European films and series, what themes and questions are associated with them, and how this helps shape the image of democracy. Viviane Thill worked for 28 years in the cinema department of the Centre national de l’audiovisuel (CNA) and was its director from 2015 to 2023. She is also a film critic and has written many articles on cinema, as well as the book Oliver Stone (in collaboration with Michel Cieutat, 1996). As a screenwriter, she wrote Perl oder Pica and Eng nei Zäit and is currently working on a new film with Eric Lamhène.
