Götterkind – After "Schwester von" by Lot Vekemans
The story of Oedipus is one of the best-known tragedies in Greek mythology: a man who kills his father and marries his mother. From this union came four children, including the famous Antigone and the sons Eteocles and Polyneices, who died fighting each other for Thebes. But what do we know about the youngest daughter, Ismene? Her life seems insignificant. “Ismene: the actionless little sister.”
Now she breaks her silence. Somewhere between life and death, where time has no meaning, she addresses the audience to tell this tragic story from her perspective. It is the story of a woman who has always lived in the shadow of her heroic and famous sister Antigone, who doubts her own right to exist and is ashamed of what she is—or is not. The play deals with family, justice, ideals, judgment, and condemnation. Ismene, the last remaining daughter of Oedipus, becomes an icon for all those who do not think in grand ideals but place emotional motives above ideological ones. The award-winning monologue by Dutch playwright Lot Vekemans (2005) raises questions about character strength, stubbornness, noble grandeur, and selfishness, presenting Ismene’s perspective in contemporary language.
