Starting from 1681, the troops of Louis XIV blockaded the fortress of Luxembourg. At Christmas 1683, the city was bombed for several days. Only at the end of April 1684 did Marshal Créqui's siege begin. After six weeks of intense fighting, the Spanish garrison had to surrender. Vauban learned from this siege and strengthened the fortress on the surrounding plateaus.
