Vernissage | Exhibition "ΙΣΤΟΣ / WEB – Contemporary Artists’ Books"
Does the thickness of a book obscure vision? From its roots in the rigid aesthetic hierarchies of classical antiquity to its radical reconfiguration in the 19th and 20th centuries, the artist's book has gradually asserted itself as an expanded and heterogeneous artistic field, where textual, visual, material and conceptual registers are intertwined and constantly renegotiated. How does the artist's book retain its value in today's digital environment, shaped by algorithms, where linear reading gives way to simultaneity and networks? The collective exhibition "ΙΣΤΟΣ / WEB – Contemporary Artists’ Books" explores the survival, transformation and renewed agency of the artist's book in today's media landscape through the works of sixteen participating artists. The exhibition unfolds as a spatialized artist's book, transforming the Cercle Cité exhibition space into a book both concrete and immaterial. With eight contemporary Greek artists and eight Luxembourgish artists, the exhibition presents varied manifestations of the artist's book, from tactile paper to virtual forms, from handcrafted objects to electronic presences. Video projections, sculptures, photographs, digital works, mixed techniques and poetic interventions converge to form a multimedia environment. The exhibition space itself becomes an experiential library, a network where words generate images, and reading becomes a holistic experience. It also features a selection of artist’s books from the collections of the National Library of Luxembourg (BnL), including works by internationally renowned artists in resonance with those presented. The sixteen participating artists rehabilitate the artist's book as a creative site of metaphorical thought, making the exhibition a cognitive and poetic space confronting the present digital era.
