The KANAL project in Brussels, located in a former Citroën garage (built 1933-34) currently undergoing a major transformation, is set to become one of Europe’s largest centres for modern and contemporary art and architecture. Three speakers will share their experience with this exceptional and innovative project, both for its scale and the process led by the Bouwmeester Maître Architecte (BMA) and their team.
Kristiaan Borret, BMA 2015–2025 in Brussels, will present the vision behind KANAL, a major urban public project developed through open competitions and driven by diversity and experimentation.
Philippe Viérin, architect and Managing Director of noAarchitecten and Guest Professor at Politecnico di Milano, will discuss the transformation of the old Citroën factory into a cultural 'Third Place,' redefining the museum as an open civic space for interaction and collective use, responding to the decline of shared public spaces in cities.
Aliki Loïzidis (architect, L'ÉQUIPE architectes) will present KANAL's bar-brasserie, designed as a mediator between city and culture, inspired by the amphitheatre and covered square, promoting public gathering and flexibility while referencing the site's industrial heritage.
Organised as part of the “Soft Power: The Brussels Way of Making the City” exhibition.
