Since its foundation in 1984 by Benedictine Don Laurentino Sáenz de Buruaga, Schola Antiqua has been dedicated to the study and performance of early music, with a particular focus on Gregorian chant. All its members were trained from their choral childhood at the Escolanía of the Abbey of Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caídos, and their repertoire covers liturgical monody as well as polyphony from Ars Antiqua and Ars Nova, in both organ-accompanied renditions and vocal/instrumental ensembles. The Schola has performed at numerous festivals in Europe, the United States, Central America, the Middle East, and Japan, and has released recordings of Mozarabic and Gregorian chant as well as historical polyphonies from the 15th to 19th centuries. Notable projects include contemporary works such as Apocalipsis (Jesús Torres) and Pahariόn (Konstantia Gourzi), as well as historical pieces like Officium Defunctorum by Tomás Luis de Victoria and compositions by Sebastián de Vivanco. Since 2023, Schola Antiqua has been participating in the European Repertorium project, which is rediscovering liturgical music forgotten after the Council of Trent through digitisation, while maintaining an active role in liturgical celebrations.
