Born in Hamburg to Turkish parents, Derya grew up between Anatolian heritage and urban multiculturalism. Introduced to music within her family, she learned several instruments, especially the bağlama, a seven-string Turkish lute that became the core of her musical world.
With her band Grup Şimşek, she revives Anatolian folk by respecting its roots while infusing it with modern psychedelic energy. Formed about ten years ago and made up of international musicians, the group prefers the term "outernational" over world music, claiming a borderless sound.
